Excerpt
With everyone thinking I was angry, I was taking a wild guess that it would be at least thirty minutes before anyone realized I was gone. That was a good head start. From the vague vibe I was feeling from Jess and the other traitors, I was looking at covering a distance of about four miles. I ran that nearly every morning, and the time it took to get there would allow my wolf and me time to figure out what we were going to do when we got there.

Cutting the bitch was what my wolf wanted to do, and I couldn’t honestly say that I wasn’t on board with that plan, but I was smart enough to know that I couldn’t take on eight werewolves on my own. I would have to find their hideout and come back with my pack. Bringing Phoenix and his clan to watch my back in case any of my wolves were really on Jessica’s side was a smart thing to do, so I would let them come, too, not that I would really get a choice in the matter; I doubted he would stay behind even if I begged him to.

A loud clatter had my head whipping around to look behind me again. An aluminum trash can lay on its side, its contents spilling into the street. A tabby cat peeked around the edge of the torn trash bag and I exhaled in relief. I was a sad case, indeed. I laughed at myself. I was not used to being the monster.

“I aim to change that, Mena.”

I rolled my eyes at my wolf. “You just be you and let me be me and we’ll get along just fine.”

Soft laughter filled my head and I had to smile. I had to admit that I liked her, regardless of how much trouble she was causing me with Phoenix. At least we had come to a compromise. I didn’t know how well said compromise was going to work out, or even if it would at all, but I was willing to try. Everyone deserved a shot at happiness, even with as insane as our case may be.

As I turned my head back around to continue on my journey, I ran smack-dab into the hard chest of a man. He was in shadow, so I couldn’t see his face. Stumbling back, I attempted to get my balance, but his arms closed tightly around my body, jerking me to him and trapping my arms down at my sides so I couldn’t move.

Struggling against his solid hold on me, I opened my mouth to let out a scream, but he twisted me around and clamped a hand over my mouth so fast that I didn’t know what was happening until I was being pulled backward, away from the security of the streetlights that lined the suburban road.

I raised my knee up then brought my foot down hard on the toe of his shoe. He let out a muffled grunt, but continued to drag me into the shadows.

This had to be one of the werewolves. The strength alone told me that. They had to have been watching my house, just waiting for me to leave. This bastard was going to kill me if I didn’t do something.

My wolf stirred under my skin. She wanted out and it was the first time since I’d been bitten that I agreed with that plan. With only a little more than human strength and quick reflexes, it wasn’t possible for me to handle a grown male werewolf on my own.

My final option, before letting my wolf free, was try to at least injure him. I hoped that would be enough to make him loosen his grip on me enough so I could run. If he gave chase, I would have to concede and let my wolf take over.

Gripping the dagger tighter in my palm, I rotated my wrist and drove the blade into his side as hard as I could. An ear-piercing ululation erupted from his throat and he let go of me. I didn’t wait or look back. I ran as fast as my legs would carry me, adrenaline and my wolf giving me the speed and strength to push my muscles past what a human would be able to endure.

“Mena… Mena!” I heard the cry behind me, but my mind wasn’t registering anything except panic and the need to get as far away from my attacker as possible. “Mena—wait! It’s me…” A strangled groan had me slowing. “…it’s… it’s Phoenix. I—I’m so sorry, Mena.”

I froze, not wanting to look back at the man, terrified that what he’d spoken was true. If it was—if I turned and saw those ice-blue eyes staring back at me, it would destroy any trust I had ever had in him.

“Please, Mena, I never meant to hurt you. I was only trying to scare you so you would realize what a stupid stunt going off on your own to find the killers was. What were you thinking?”

The blood rushed through my veins at an impossible speed, and fury washed over me in waves as I stood there trying to decide whether to walk away or allow my wolf to rip Phoenix’s head off. She was all for the second option.

I heard him cough, and then groan in agony. I imagined he was pulling the dagger out of whatever organ I had been lucky enough to hit. There was a lot of heavy, ragged breathing and two more guttural-sounding coughs. It appeared as though I had hit a lung. Too bad it wasn’t his heart! I wasn’t sure stabbing him in the heart with a silver blade would kill him, but I would have put money on a bet that it would have been a hell of a lot more painful.

I turned my head to glare at him, but the hatred I had expected to feel wasn’t there. He had fallen to his knees, and his head was bent, his eyes focused on the bright red stain spreading across his new shirt.

Shaking my head, I looked up to the sky and asked, “Why me?” After receiving no answer, I sighed and began the one-hundred-meter walk back to Phoenix.

Review: Good Side of Sin, by K.S. Haigwood

Good side of sin -singleAmazon US

Amazon UK

This book is a K.S. Haigwood classic! Good Side of Sin is the third book in the Save My Soul series and and absolute whirlwind of romance, action and adventure.

This installment of the story follows the adventures of Josselyn as she completes her Line of Defense Academy training and is sent out in the field to bring an undesirable situation under control. The deal with Lucifer is not as good as it seems, and this time he has solid plans to take over Heaven and Earth. His half-souled demons are wreaking havoc on Earth and the angels have been struck by common human afflictions. Should they be even able to lie? Should they want to?

As with the other books in the series, what gives life to all the action are the incredibly well-developed characters. They don’t feel made-up, but real, like normal people, who feel, think, love the same way any of us would.

There is one tiny surprise towards the end of the book, a little link that connects two of Haigwood’s series – I won’t tell you what it is; you’ll  have to read it in order to find out. As its is, it’s perfectly done, and blends the two thus far-separate stories together smoothly.

K.S. Haigwood takes the simple concept of a battle between good and evil and turns it on its head. This riveting read is a rollercoaster of emotion, some of the best writing this author has ever produced. Inspired and original, and gripping till the very end, this is not the kind of read you can come back to later. You’ll want to read it in one go. Genius on the page. I loved it. Five sweet gorgeous stars for Good Side of Sin from me.

Good side of sin -single
Josselyn has just spent the last three months in intense Line of Defense training so she could join Malcolm’s search party. Little did she know the archangels had no intention of letting her bring back into Heaven an angel who had opened a portal between Heaven and Hell, at least not before saving God’s creations from the tight grasp of Lucifer first.
Three months have passed since the angel Rhyan released nine repented demons from Hell, and now innocent people are dying, but their souls are not going to Heaven. Josselyn’s mission is to find the demon responsible for stealing the souls and bring it to justice before Lucifer gains enough power to rise and claim Heaven and earth as his own.
Her whole world is shaken when she discovers what tool Lucifer is using to track down the one key to the release of his eternal damnation. Thoros is one half-souled immortal she prayed she would never see again. The ex-Prince of Lust had stolen her heart and crushed it with a cheeky smile. Now, not only is she being forced to put her damaged ego aside and face the only man that has ever hurt her, but she has to work with him in order to complete her assignment.

Is she strong enough to keep from falling in love with him again? Or is their love the only thing that can keep Lucifer from getting the one thing he wants most? Heaven.

Excerpt:

He shoved another armload full of socks and t-shirts on top of jeans in a duffel bag, then turned to walk to the bathroom to retrieve personal hygiene items. He barely glanced up to acknowledge Isaiah, arms crossed over his chest in a comfortable stance, leaning on the doorjamb.
“Going somewhere?” Isaiah asked coolly.
“As far away from here as I can get,” he responded from the darkened bathroom.
“You do know there is a meeting about to begin downstairs, right?”
Thoros nodded once as he re-entered the bedchamber, not bothering to look at the archangel. He tossed the items in the duffle with the rest of the things he would need for his extended journey. “I am aware of the meeting. I am also aware that she does not want or need me there.” He looked left then right, and then paused only another brief moment before zipping the bag closed and tossing it over his right shoulder.
Thoros meant to walk through the doorway, but Isaiah stood upright and blocked the only exit with his body. Well, there was always the window. He thought about turning and diving through the glass and wondered briefly if he would clear the cement and land in the water of the underground swimming pool. The cement would hurt like a bitch. Hell, who was he kidding? The damn glass would hurt! He knew fleeting wasn’t an option. The angel would have already put a halt on that shit.
Letting the pack fall to the floor, Thoros rolled his eyes toward the ceiling and huffed. “Out of my way, old man. She made it clear she doesn’t want me. If you didn’t hear her, I can give you a recap: it was a whole lot of ‘get lost’.”
“Old man? I’ll have you know I look younger than you. Especially as of late. You should exfoliate more, and moisturize.”
“You knew what I meant.”
“That I am thousands of years old? Yes,” Isaiah nodded as his lips pursed together. “I am that. That also means I probably have a lot of wisdom, and listening to me would more than likely be in your best interest.”
“Listening to you has done nothing but piss me off, angel.”
“You have to go with her. You have to know that it is difficult for her to trust you when she has thought all along that you’ve betrayed her.”
Thoros’ jaw locked down tight and he spoke through his teeth as anger burst from the depths of his half-soul. “Yeah, and whose fault was that? You could have told her at any time in the three months we’ve spent apart that I was the one who saved her. That I am the one she is destined to be with. But no, instead, you were a coward who let her dream day and night about going in search of the lost angel, a male fate never intended her to be with!”
Isaiah moved out of the way to let him pass and Thoros jumped at the chance, grabbing his duffle and rushing through the doorway. “I see. You are just going to take the easy way out? Never look back? Never see her again?”
“Oh, I’ll see her again,” he said, but didn’t bother slowing down or looking at the archangel. “I’ll see her every time I close my eyes.”
“She deserves for you to give her time, Thoros. If you truly love her, then you must know that walking away is not the answer to your problems.”
Thoros froze as his boot landed on the third step from the bottom of the grand staircase. Love. He allowed himself a moment to think about that word. His skin flushed hot and his foot slipped to the next step, causing him to lose his balance and having to reach out for the banister to steady himself. He believed she was his soulmate and that he wanted to be with her—but love? No. LoveNever. He had never been in love before. Was this what this horrible feeling was? And what happened if the one you allowed yourself to fall in love with didn’t love you back? What the hell happens then?Right. Broken heart. That’s what the horrible feeling was. Fan-fucking-tastic! He had never expected to experience it before, but he never imagined it would actually hurt. He rubbed at the center of his chest and fought the hot sting of tears that filled his eyes. He looked around him, all of a sudden dizzy. Wiping at the sheen of sweat that had broken on his brow, Thoros swallowed hard and concentrated on calming the erratic beating of his heart.
“Do not give up on her. Your time will come, son.”
He turned around and looked to the top of the stairs at Isaiah, blinking the angel into focus. “And what if it never does?” he whispered around the lump in his throat.
“You will know you tried and will never have any regrets where she is concerned.”
“I already have regrets where Josselyn is concerned. I regret ever having met her.”
Thoros turned and stumbled down the remaining steps, and then crossed the foyer and opened the front door.
“It’s for the best.”

Isaiah didn’t respond to his thought, so he took a step over the threshold and closed the door gently behind him.

REVIEW QUOTES!

I finished this book in one day, couldn’t put it down!! ”
Brandi

Save my Soul is a page-turner that I would recommend to anyone with an appreciation for romance and the paranormal. ”
Mandy Trouten

REVIEW FROM A READER:

Okay so I’m writing this through tears. Wow, this story was just amazing, especially the ending. That was an ending I wasn’t anticipating. The plot always kept me guessing and kept me on the edge of my seat. The concept of the story was unique, so different than what I read all the time. It was refreshing, and truly amazing.
What happens if you woke up to find yourself dying on a hospital bed? What if you couldn’t move, couldn’t speak, but could hear everything that was occurring? Well that is what happens to 29 year old Kendra who had a bad accident after going rappelling with her friends. Imagine her surprise when being patched up and stitched back together by a doctor, who voice she finds safe and soothing, she hears a voice in her mind. Actually not just one voice, but two of them. Who are they? Well it turns out it is her guardian angel and the guardian angel of the doctor who saved her life. The doctor’s guardian angel, Coen, literally makes her an offer she couldn’t refuse. He made it so that Kendra lives, even after that tragic accident that was suppose to end her life. But he gives her a task in exchange for her life. Her task? Make the misguided doctor believe in God again. But there is one catch to this. Kendra only has one week to make Dr. Adam Chamberlain believe in God or she loses her soul and dies all over again except this time, permanently. How do you make a man who has given up on God believe again? Especially after a tragic event that caused the doctor to lose his faith in God in the first place. Can love conquer years of resentment and heartbreak? Or will both Kendra’s and Adam’s souls be lost forever?
Okay, I really loved the idea of putting guardian angels and guardian demons in this book. I never heard of a story like this before, it’s a really neat idea if you ask me. Kendra’s character in the book made me smile a lot. She was a strong female character who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to speak her mind. But not only is she brave and outspoken, she is also sweet and caring. She surprised me so much in this book with her generosity and kind actions. She was a character that many girls and women can relate to. I personally hope I can be something like Kendra one day. And the doctor in the story? I have one word to describe him: Amazing! Adam was what I expected him to be: sweet, remote, misguided but overall he was loyal to the end. His stubbornness added to his character and I think he was the perfect man for Kendra. Even Rhyan, Kendra’s guardian angel, will always have a place in my heart as well. He was so funny in the book and very charming. The emotion and love he shows to Kendra made me want to cry and give him a hug. His character added something unique to this book. Overall, an amazing book! I highly recommend this book to everyone who enjoys a great story with amazing characters.
Some of my favorite quotes from the book:
“I wasn’t talking to you, I was talking to myself.”
“Don’t do that, people will think you’re crazy.”
“You better watch it, Ms. Larkin, Ashley’s looks will break that nice camera of yours.” her boyfriend joined in with the cruel laughter. I started to speak, but Adam beat me to it. “If it made it through your shots, the camera will be just fine after Ashley’s session.”
“Are you going to tell me the reason I can’t stop looking at you?”
“Love conquers all evil. Don’t judge a book by its cover. Everything happens for a reason and … If you haven’t found your soul mate yet, don’t ever, ever give up hope; he or she is out there somewhere.” – Joc

~

HELL’S GIFT – Book 2 in the ‘Save My Soul’ series. 4.8/5 star rating

Depression consumes the guardian angel, Rhyan, after his human charge chooses her soulmate over him. Filled with anger and despair, he lashes out. And when his hate-filled words land him neck-deep in Hell, he realizes he’s gone too far. He expects trouble, but not to discover his own soulmate in the fiery depths. Abigail is there with good reason, but she’s done her time, and in order to save them both, Rhyan must strike a deal with the Devil. The stakes are higher than ever before, with his soul, his friends and even the fate of Heaven and Earth in jeopardy. If he fails, Rhyan stands to lose more than he ever feared. Will true love be denied? It will take everything he’s got to break down the traps Lucifer puts in his way. New lines are drawn and old scores are settled, and Rhyan is in for the fight of his life. With Abigail as the prize, and humanity in the balance, he will stop at nothing to claim…Hell’s Gift.

Hell’s Gift was a page turner from start to finish! ” Jennifer Wedmore

REVIEW FROM A READER:

Hell’s Gift is the second novel in the Save My Soul series, yet a standalone story, just like the first. You can read my review of book one, Save My Soul, here. A completely original idea for a fantasy romance, this book is a huge accomplishment on so many levels.
For a start, there’s a lot of story within those pages, and not one word of that is useless waffle. The action starts on page one and finishes with the last sentence. What made it more interesting for me was the frequent change of environment. Most of the action takes place in Hell, but it’s not the sort of Hell you would have imagined. I won’t tell you how it’s different, just trust that it is. Sometimes it’s better, often it’s worse, and the pain is not necessarily physical.
Rhyan’s trials are imaginative, and the secondary plots developed enough to allow us a glimpse into the psyche of many of the demons and fallen angels that populate the upper classes of this incredibly rich world. There are minions and beasts, love and hate, fear and debauchery – you’ve really got to read it and see for yourself.
Characterisation is one of K.S. Haigwood’s strongest points. Rhyan, a depressed guardian angel, is very well developed, his voice clear and easily identifiable throughout the story. You can understand his predicament – who doesn’t know the feeling of unrequited love? – and you can almost foresee his reactions. But. There’s always a but, with this author, because K.S. Haigwood can deliver enough twists and turns to turn a tornado on its head. Just as you think you’ve figured where the story is going next, she’s duped you again. Rhyan grows through his experiences and, in the background, you can see a few cracks beginning to appear in the personalities of secondary characters, too. Each one gets what they deserve, even if it’s just another chance to prove themselves.
I loved the story and the idea behind it. Love conquers all is the message in many books, but you rarely see it as challenged and as humorised as here. Take this short dialogue, for example:
“Which direction should I go?” I said to both Pogo and Malcolm.
“North,” Pogo replied.
“South,” Malcolm said.
“West it is, then,” I said, and stepped out into the acid blizzard.
The whole novel is littered with good chuckle moments, and even in the darkest hour, the thinnest hint of a silver lining is still visible among the clouds.
I wholeheartedly recommend reading this book. Shock therapy for body and soul, delivered at a hundred miles an hour with the humor and charisma of a trendsetter, Hell’s Gift is certain to be hailed the new wonder-drug to cure all ills. No one is perfect, and this books shows you why you don’t have to be. Get ready to laugh, cry and most of all feel your way through this addictive story. Kristie Haigwood is a skilled sorceress of the fantasy world. Five very well-deserved stars for this effort. – E Medler
