My tease for today is from a book which has not been released yet. It’s by an author who’s already made it onto my Awesome Authors List. Shall I tell you whom I’m talking about? Shall I? Shall I? Shall I? Ok, I will.

Bruce Blake has come up with another epic fantasy series, stunningly written, and yes, I am one of the lucky people to have read book one, WHEN SHADOWS FALL. I don’t have a cover for it yet, so I’ve shown you his other novels, all perfect in my view.

~

Here’s the excerpt I’ve promised you, from WHEN SHADOWS FALL:

Rak’bana leaped toward him and snatched at the roll of parchment, her fingers grasping the edge. It took only an instant for Ine’vesi to realize she’d tricked him. The priest danced back two steps, but she’d gotten a grip on the scroll and it unrolled between them. They both stared at its blank surface as another ball of fire struck the building and a shower of sparks spilled through one of the high windows.

They raised their heads; their eyes met.

“Bana,” he said, voice calm and even, though his eyes reflected different emotions. “Don’t do–”

When days of peace approach their end.

“Rak’bana.”

And wounds inflicted are too deep to mend.” Fear and disappointment surged through her, but she forced herself to speak clearly, drawing out the words to their full power, ensuring the parchment heard her over the reverberating impacts shuddering the walls. “A sign shall come, a lock with no key.

“Stop, Bana!”

Borne by a man from across the sea.

The wavering light of the flames licking the world flashed on Ine’vesi’s blade. Rak’bana had an instant to recognize the slender knife before he jerked her toward him and plunged the tip between her ribs.

You really should try and read Bruce Blake’s writing. He is an absolute diamond. Khirro’s Journey is my favourite, and you could get the trilogy in one convenient package. Here are the links and blurbs, on Bruce Blake’s blog.

My tease for today is from The Super Spies and the Pied Piper, by Lisa Orchard

~

“Let go of me!” she shrieked in a strangled voice and tried to wriggle out of his grasp.

The Stalker put his hand over her mouth and lifted her into his arms. Sarah gagged as the smell of stale cigarettes assaulted her nostrils. Saliva flooded her mouth and she willed herself not to puke. Struggling proved futile as he effortlessly held her like she was nothing more than a tiny rag doll.

~

The third book in the Super Spies series by Lisa Orchard is as satisfying to read as the first two books. It’s action from page one onwards, and I’m a sucker for action books. I’ll write the review soon and tell you more about this awesome YA adventure.

My tease for today is from The Unseen Promise, by Ellen Mae Franklin

unseen

~

He was alone, in the shadows, full of loathing and odious contempt, and as the room emptied Drakite stepped up to the cauldron and spat. A gleaming shard of hate crept across his face; he had given up his gift in that spitting. It was a well-loved deposit of curiosity and chaos, a glob of ruination for this world of theirs. He threw back his head and laughed.

~

I’ve only just started reading The Unseen Promise, but I have to say I am impressed. It’s a very well-written fantasy book, and seems full of intrigue, curses, vengeance and retribution. So far, it looks to be a definite 5 star contender. I’ll post the review when I’m done.

My tease for today is from A Lost Kitten, by Jessica Kong

a lost kitten Jessica Kong(and it’s not the sort of kitten you’re thinking of!)

~

“The children!” Areo shouted while executing several lethal kicks and punches. “We have to find the kittens and get them out of here!”

“We have to get everyone out of here!” corrected John. He grabbed his opponent by the head and jerked it to the right, breaking his neck.

~

Oh, I love this book! Thank you, Jessica Kong, for writing it!

My tease for today is from Grammar Without Tears, by Tabitha Ormiston-Smith

grammar

(this scene is about the use of inverted commas)

A: Oh, I see. What an idiot. It says ‘”SMOKERS please use the ashtray’. The problem, Biggles old thing, is in the use of inverted commas. You see, this fool has used them for emphasis, whereas actually enclosing a word in inverted commas weakens its meaning – saying “smokers” in inverted commas really means something like, ‘people who are thought to be smokers but are actually not’, or pseudo smokers, something like that. This is why it’s so offensive when people ask after your “HUSBAND”, if you’re a lady, that is. They are really implying that he’s not your real husband but a you-know-what.

B: By Jove! How dastardly!

~

Non-fiction, but of a very original type. I like the way Tabitha illustrates the most important aspects an author should be aware of, when writing. She made each one into scenes or dialogue. Novel and imaginative.

My tease for today is from Witchwood Estate – books 1 and 2 – by Patti Roberts

Patti's Witchwood 1 and 2The old woman, unaware that Andrew had woken, reached out across him holding an antique blue bottle, pointing it directly at Alexandria. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see shortbread crumbs speckling the front of Alexandria’s t-shirt.

A white mist, radiating slowly from Alexandria, rose then drifted into the narrow neck of the bottle. Alexandria began to fade, disappearing before his eyes. He tried to move his arms, to strike out at the old woman and knock the bottle away, but they sat limp and heavy as lead in his lap.

~

Oh, what a treat this book is! Patti has such a good story-telling voice, there’s no way you can resist her. I could read Patti’s books again and again and again, in an uninterrupted cycle. They make you dream, they make you imagine unusual worlds, they hold an impossible amount of magic. Absolutely love this book.

My tease for today is from The Super Spies and the Cat Lady Killer, by Lisa Orchard

The cat lady killer

“Run!” Sarah shrieked.

Sarah pulled Jackie out of the window, and then grabbed Lacey’s hand. She took off sprinting through the Cat Lady’s back yard. The tall grasses gripped her ankles as she ran, slowing her down.

~

A very entertaining young YA mystery novel. Loving it. Look out for a string of features on Lisa Orchard and her books, starting next week.
